some modern milan
03/02/2010 · 1 Comment
so in milan i stumbled upon an architecture gallery. they had models of current projects that where pretty cool. these aren’t probably the marquee projects we now but definitely above average projects. the ones is a housing project which i forgot who designed and the other is the zurich insurance headquarters by mac9. i enjoyed the models and going on a mission to find them in real life.

milan was my final stop on my trip around italy. i thought this place was amazing. it should always be in the discussion for worlds best city. i don’t know why i liked it so much but it had a good vibe. i wasn’t expecting much. i didn’t think there was anything to see. i was way off, probably why i was so surprised. everything is just massive from the train station to the duomo. i got to see the last supper by da vinci which was awesome. i really liked the galleria emanuele vittorio. the glass roof arches and dome are a nice touch on this mall. it was a good day and definitely a city worth visiting.

following scarpa

i got to follow some of the projects by one of my favorite architects, carlos scarpa. i remember his work from our arch history class and he was a detail oriented guy. he also made interior design cool. i visited 5 of his projects. first was the olivetti typewriter store. it was now a dentist office, but i had fun peeking in. the inside looked nice. ridiculous stairs and shelves dropping from the ceiling. next in venice, i went to the correr museum. i didn’t take pictures inside, didn’t know if i could. it wasn’t anything amazing but one room you could tell was totally scarpa. stuff was just all over the place and made the museum a little more fun. then i went to the ivav university. there he designed the entrance to the school. the door they gave him he used as a landscape ornament. bad-ass. finally in venice, i saw a bridge he made. it was cool, again loaded with details and sleek and clean.
in verona, i visited the castelvecchio museum. it is a really fun museum. the rooms are almost interactive in bringing the paintings to you instead of lying flat on walls or rooms. statues float in the middle of rooms on platforms. and the building is restored with modern materials for a nice touch. then there is the horse. hanging out outside. really cool. at least to me it is. it was fun to follow one of my architect-heroes.

Verona is a day trip from venice. you could also just ride the train an extra hour or two to milan. it’s a great little town, know mostly for being the inspiration behind romeo and juliet.

venice the beautiful. i couldn’t believe it snowed on my visit with made it awesome but really cold. the whole city is a big pedestrian island with no main streets. trying to find something that isn’t a major landmark is almost impossible. but my friend told me the best quote: “just remember you can’t get too lost cause its an island. it’s not like you can get off.”

so for the past week, i visited friends in florence, italy. i was surprised to find out how much history the city had. it was the place where basically the renaissance was born. for any one stopping by, i would recommend seeing piazza michalangelo, the original david, and combination of the duomo and baptistery. it was a great trip and a good base camp for my italian adventure.
